Artist Statement

My current work is done in pencil, ink, and either of these sometimes in conjunction with the painting medium of casein, an ancient type of water soluble paint that has as its basis, a milk protein. I work on heavy rag paper like Stonehenge or sometimes on hardboard panels.

Each painting or drawing is multi-layered with under paintings of color or drawing marks. Each layer contributes to the final look of the image even though its presence may be quite subtle. While each work is very deliberate in terms of the execution of each layer, the final look of the image is never predetermined. Once a layer is completed, the next layer is determined in response to what is there until I feel that the painting or drawing is complete and the experience of creating it is over.
